Red wood ant – Formica rufa – Inhabits mainly coniferous and mixed forests.
 
It prefers sunny and bright places, especially the edge of the forest or along forest paths. The body length of the worker bee is 6 to 9 mm, and that of the male and female 9 to 11 mm. They move a maximum of 100 m from the anthill.

The anthill is up to 1 m high, sometimes even more. They build their nests in the shape of a dome, thanks to which the anthill is able to accumulate more solar energy. From the chambers located in the upper part of the anthill, numerous corridors lead to its surface. One anthill can house up to 100,000 ants.
