Common red ant – Myrmica rubra – Queen is slightly larger than worker.

The worker ant is usually 4 to 5 mm long and is equipped with a stinger. The queen is slightly larger and reaches a maximum of 6 mm. Most often it inhabits forests, meadows, fields or gardens. To live, they need specific conditions with the right degree of humidity, which is why they choose regions between lowlands and mountains.

It builds its nests under stones, in tufts of grass or by erecting smaller above-ground mounds. They also inhabit the bark and hollows of trees. Colonies are monogamous and polygamous. This species is quite widespread in almost all of Europe, Asia and Japan.
