The most beautiful of all buildings in Ellora.
Which is the world’s largest monolithic (i.e. made of one stone) structure carved into the rocks. It is dedicated to the god Shiva, one of the three highest gods of Hinduism, next to Brahma and Vishnu.

7,000 people worked on it for 150 years. During the construction of Kailasa, 200,000 tons of stone had to be extracted. The temple lies in a courtyard carved in the rocks. It has dimensions of 55 x 36 meters and a height of 33 meters. The lower part of the temple, eight meters high, consists of giant statues of elephants and lions. During the work, the builders did not use scaffolding, the stone was mined from top to bottom.
