Margarine – It was invented in 1869 by the French pharmacist Hippolyte Mége – Mouriés.

He did it in response to a contest announced by Napoleon III Bonaparte. The task was to invent and produce a greasy bread spread that each soldier could keep in a backpack. Butter, which melted and spoiled, did not fulfill this role.

Hippolyte Mége – Mouriés created an emulsion based on beef tallow, milk and water. He patented his invention in 1872 and called it “margarine”. This name comes from combining the word glycerin with the Greek màrgaron (pearl white). Unfortunately, another Franco-Prussian war broke out less than a year later, so there was no time to supply soldiers going to the front with a new substitute for butter.
